The 2020 Summer Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, will have the highest number of athletes, athletes-in-training, and athletes-playing-in pairs at any sporting event in history, according to a report.
In 2020, a record number of more than 3,000 athletes, sports and their related institutions and associations from more than 40 countries are expected to participate in the Summer Olympics in Rio.
And that number is expected to grow exponentially, according the U.S. Olympic Committee.
It is projected that more than 1,000 Olympic athletes and sports organizations will be participating in the games, including a record 688 from North America, according a report released Monday by the International Olympic Committee (IOC).
The number of North American athletes and teams in 2020 is expected surpass the total of athletes and athletes who participated in the 1996 Atlanta Games.
The IOC said it expects the number of U.N. athletes to reach 7,000 by the time the games conclude in July.
